California Dreaming
19 September 2007 All studmasters face a series of defining moments on the way to launching a successful stallion. They constantly ask themselves questions; have I priced my horse correctly, is the advertising getting the most important points across, does the market place see the horse the way we do, is the stallion letting down as he should, what numbers must I have and do I need, will he have the required libido to do the job, what will his foals be like?
The single most important question to be answered though is, will my stallion be fertile? Nothing else matters if the stallion can not get his mares in foal. We hope we have not pre-empted ourselves but CALIFORNIA DANE is batting at 100% from the get go.
Now, some people may not grasp the overall importance of this. The simple management issues are that CALIFORNIA DANE, like most insured stallions, was not test bred so all of his various ducts and glands were unused so an amount of dead cells and the like could be expected in the first cover. Also, the mechanics of the situation are such that after years of being told that the girls were off limit to suddenly have the green light given does not necessarily
lead to the new stallion having a full grasp of what is expected. Add to this that any first time stallion is not really as relaxed as would be ideal, leads the studmaster away from any real conclusions from an early negative test.
These facts also leads to much celebrating and "high fiveing" from the staff when the first mare served by the new stallion comes back with a positive scan in foal as they, as much as anyone, know the importance of fertile stallion with great libido and an easy temperament. The wonderful news for all involved with CALIFORNIA DANE is that he has the first mare served diagnosed in foal on a 15 day scan. So, with the EI lock down still in place CALIFORNIA DANE is making good progress through the 50 mares that were already on farm for him with more than a dozen already carrying service and a new confidence every time he is led to the covering barn.
We would love to be able to show you a recent side on picture of CALIFORNIA DANE however with the lock down in place we obviously cannot have a photographer on farm. He did recently feature on TVN and Bred To Win have some footage which will be shown in the very near future so we hope this will give people a true idea of the progress he has made from outstanding racehorse to outstanding (we believe) sire.
