Another GR2 winner for Danasinga

For almost the entire length of the long Flemington straight, super-consistent gelding Barlinnie looked to have the $350,000 Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) in his grasp.

In the shadows of the post, the hard charging The Fuzz (Danasinga x Drama Queen (NZ) (Prince of Praise by (NZ)), under a vigorous ride by Vlad Duric, ground out a half-head victory over Barlinnie with Orange County 1 ½-lengths back in third.

Trained by David Hayes, The Fuzz was looked on as a Melbourne Cup hope after winning the Geelong Cup (2400m) and finishing second in the Saab Quality (2500m) at Flemington last year. He never made it to the world famous two-miler but the Sydney equivalent to be held at Randwick on May 3 is on his agenda.

But first, Hayes has eyes on the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (1900m), which this year will be run at Canterbury on April 5.

The Fuzz originally raced in New Zealand for Vanessa & Wayne Hillis. After two wins from six starts in his homeland, he was purchased by clients of David Hayes. He won first up for Hayes but was dogged by bad luck in his next five starts.

The Fuzz is the first foal of the stakes-placed Prince Of Praise mare, Drama Queen, a half sister to the Wellington Guineas (G2) and Eight Carat Classic (G2) winner Kainui Belle (Kashani), who also placed in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (G1) and New Zealand 2000 Guineas (G1).

The Fuzz is a son of the royally bred sire Danasinga (Danehill), who now stands at the Paul Higgins run Baerami Thoroughbreds, Denman NSW, after beginning his career in New Zealand.

Danasinga’s two Group 1 winners, Portland Singa and Piachay, achieved career highlights in the Brisbane Cup (G1) when it was run over 3200m.

Well supported by breeders in Australia, Danasinga attracted 99 mares in 2005, 100 in 2006 and 64 last year.

His first crop of Australian conceived yearlings make their sale debut this year. He has five catalogued for the select session of the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling sale and 13 in the following four sessions. His has just one representative at the Easter Yearling sale, however there are 16 lots by Danasinga catalogued for the Classic Yearling Sale.
