Randwick Guineas Group I winner for Danasinga

Danasinga Back in the Spotlight

When Dan Nikolic navigated an inside path on Metal Bender in Saturday’s $550,000 Group I Turnpoint Randwick Guineas (1600m), the Jack Denham-trained gelding became the third Group 1 winner for Baerami Thoroughbreds Danasinga.

Winner of the 1996 Group 1 Stradbroke H (1400m), Danasinga’s previous two Group 1 winners, Piachay and Portland Singa, both claimed the Brisbane Cup when it was run over 32000 metres and carried Group 1 status.

A half-brother multiple Group 1 winner Tracy’s Element, the dam of modern day stakes-winners Red Element and the unbeaten Typhoon Tracy, Danasinga retired to Waikato Stud in 1996 before moving to Baerami seven years later.

Purchased for $160,000 by Jack Denham from the Waikato Stud draft at the 2007 Inglis Easter Yearling sale, Metal Bender comes from the final crop sired by Danasinga at Waikato stud.

The winner of 4 of his 6 career starts, Metal Bender has returned $416,400with the promise of more to come in the near future. Following the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas in two weeks, Metal Bender will be given his chance in the AJC Australian Derby on April 11, which is where the son of Danasinga will really shine according to Jack Denham’s son Allan.

“He probably wasn’t expected to win today over a mile but that just shows how good he is because he’s a dead set mile and a half horse,” said Denham

“He’s done an incredible job this horse.”

Metal Bender’s Hong Kong winning dam Jacqwin (Bluebird) is a half-sister to Cambridge Stud’s Group 1 winning son of Danehill, Keeper.

Another trainer who would take some comfort from the win of Metal Bender is Peter Moody, who was already in celebration mode following the win of Headway in the Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Moody had purchased Metal Bender’s half-brother by Savabeel at the 2008 NZ Premier Sale for the same amount that Metal Bender was knocked down to Denham.
