Bending Metal
31 March 2009 OK, now we are not ones for bragging or for saying ‘I told you so’ but we told you so. We have been at pains to point out for a long time the folly of overmating mares, of sending them to high priced over hyped but ultimately unsuitable shuttle stallions, the down side of exposing your mare to promises made in glossy brochures designed by a marketing guru who knows nothing about horses nor cares about your bank balance. This present crop of Danasinga three year olds is further proof that simply because an item is cheaper than the competitors, it does not mean it is inferior.
This quite incredible run for Danasinga started way back in October when, out of seemingly nowhere Buffett appeared from the astute stable of Danny O’Brien. After only a few runs he lined up against the star of the spring, Whobegotyou, at Group 2 level and almost stole the show, finishing second before a stirring fourth in the VRC Derby. Looking for an improved effort he is now equal fourth favourite for the AJC version.
Those following team Danasinga then switched attention to New Zealand where a filly was impressing most who saw her. Due Diligence was showing true quality yet, with a racing style conducive to requiring luck, was lacking the reward that she deserved. Then along came the Group 2 Sir Tristram Classic and finally her mantel as one of the leading three year old fillies was confirmed. At the same time John Size was sizing up his unraced horses from his Hong Kong base. Like all good Hong Kong trainers he always has a Danasinga or two in his stable, and an unraced three year colt caught his eye as being full of potential but not yet ready. All horses must start somewhere so the champion trainer kicked Appreciation off over 1400m first up with an emphatic victory ensuing then he followed this up with an equally impressive win at his second start. Natural improvement will see him evolve into a star of Hong Kong racing.
Now to the hero of our story, Metal Bender. We had been hearing for some time about this Danasinga that Jack Denham had. We were hearing from inside the stable, from outside the stable. Metal Bender, a 160k Easter yearling, was the only yearling purchase for the entire sale season to this legend of the training ranks. When he kicked off his racing career with a good city win then out to Hawkesbury talk was good but could he improve to group level? Two weeks ago it was an enormous jump in class, Group 1 racing over a mile at Randwick having never contested black type racing before.
Tempo was against him, racing style was against him yet pure grit and class got him home. At the end of 1600m he emerged victorious as a Guineas winner. Fast forward to Rosehill on Saturday, 400m further and a change in riding tactics did little to change the result. Again class got him home and Metal Bender is now a multiple Group 1 winner from less than 10 starts and on the cusp of being the first horse since Octagonal to win this triumvirate of races culminating in the Derby.
Now before people start to wonder about the quality of his first Australian crop, each of his first nine 2yo starters in Australia have earned prizemoney which, when you consider none of the above mentioned horses raced at 2, is incredibly encouraging. For those who have or who have at least inspected Danasinga progeny will attest, they are big and strong, they are tough and well mannered, and they will cope with work, hard tracks and our racing style. How many stallions can claim that for their progeny?
