Murph Flies
4 June 2009 Now we love telling you all about how well Danasinga is going, Group 1 winner here, Group 2 winner there, another outstanding horse in Hong Kong etc etc. We also take great delight in telling tales of California Dane and his excessive speed, fantastic foals, his close relativity to Exceed And Excel (both by Danehill and broodmare sires are half brothers for those who missed it last time) but we haven’t spent a lot of time extolling the virtues of our unsung hero Murphy’s Blu Boy.
We have in the past shown you pictures of his outstanding types, and they are outstanding. A quick glance at the sales results and ownership of his racing progeny – yes it is THAT Messrs Hogan and Walker in the NZ colt – will explain that he does produce a super type. What we haven’t done is run through the actual deeds of the progeny on the track.
Some felt that, as Murph himself was a flying machine, he would simply throw squibby 2yo’s with no scope. We felt he was so much more than that. His racing record was against what his pedigree indicated which suggests that he would have improved with age. Close relatives like Dane Ripper (send him some Danehill blood eh), I Am A Ripper, Red Express all improved with age while his own sire won a Kentucky Derby lead up race while grandad was a Champion as an older horse.
Well they might be fast but there is yet no sign of them being squibs. On 11th of May Murph produced his first winner and what a win it was. Trust Me I’m Blonde, placed in town at her first start when caught up behind subsequent stakes horses on the Blue Diamond trail, came out over 1400m and was devastating. Of course this was not the first sign of ability by this breed. Bomber Murphy had been ultra impressive in a pre Christmas Cranbourne trial win before showing a dislike for heavy tracks. Just to prove that was no fluke Bomber is now in Sydney and ambled into 3rd place in a recent Warwick Farm trial, part of a blanket finish.
On the same day though something else happened that may be the beginning of a great story. Bluzar, a lovely filly but the most immature looking of all the Murph progeny we took to sale last year, lined up in her trial. She had trialled nicely at her first attempt but this was the one to see what she could actually do. Apparently she can do a bit! She flew the gates, travelled with her head on her chest and won by 5.5 lengths with 2.5l back to third. Not only had she easily spreadeagled the field, she did so in a time that was more than a second faster than the next quickest trial. That’s all trials, not just 2yos. We wait for more.
There is also a super colt floating around in WA. Not an expensive type, he won his 9 horse trial at Ascot with ease, so much so he has kicked of his career in a stakes race. Beaten by shin soreness, he was far from disgraced and looks a super prospect for next year. No matter which way you take it, Murphy’s Blu Boy is doing IT.
