Baerami Thoroughbreds today announced that they will be standing outstanding English Group 1 winner Mount Nelson for the 2009 stud season after a deal was brokered by Heritage Bloodstock between Baerami and England’s Newsells Park Stud. In a move to fill a noticeable gap in a mid priced first season sire, his fee has been set at $16,500 including GST. In announcing the stallion Baerami principal Paul Higgins enthused that he felt the horse was perfect for the Australian racing environment. A son of proven shuttler Rock Of Gibraltar and from a Group 2 winner, Mount Nelson is bred on the proven Danehill/Sharpen Up cross that is carried by one of Australia's leading stallions in Danehill Dancer.

'We are always reticent to get overly excited about the numerous shuttle prospects we are offered' said Higgins. 'There are so many more factors need to be taken into account than the bald facts of racing form. Precociousness, racing styles, surface appreciation, and physical attributes, pedigree suitability, durability etc all need to be analysed and on all of these fronts Mount Nelson fits the bill. We have had very good success with the progeny of shuttle stallions in the past because we have very strict guidelines of what attributes we look for in them and then how we can couple that together with the local broodmare population. For us, not standing a horse like Mount Nelson was never an option as we feel his credentials to suit Australia outweigh virtually every shuttle stallion coming this year. '

A Group 1 winner at 2 in track record time and again at 4, Mount Nelson has been described by renowned English Bloodstock expert Johnny McKeever as a great individual and a superior type to his sire. Further evidence of the devastating good looks of Mount Nelson can be seen in his yearling sale price of nearly three quarters of a million dollars. A quick perusal of the mares served in Mount Nelson's first season show that he does not lack for quality mares and is arguably the best supported first season sire in England for 2009, with over a third of his book either a stakes performed mare or the dam of a stakes horse.

This also represents the first foray into Australia for the owner of Mount Nelson’s UK base, Newsells Park Stud, Andreas Jacobs, who already has studs in three different countries. "We are thrilled to be associated with Andreas, General Manager Julian Dollar and the whole team at Newsells. They are proven forward thinkers, extremely sensible in there approach and expectations and we are hoping that committing to Australia is an experience they will enjoy. They are not afraid to invest and they will be buying very good mares themselves, shrewdly of course, to support Mount Nelson.'

Mount Nelson was a precocious Group 1 winning 2yo with a lot of speed, who went on to demonstrate his toughness and class when winning the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes last year. By Rock of Gibraltar (Danehill), he is a stunning looking horse with the most incredible movement. In covering a quality book of almost 120 mares at Newsells Park this season, he has all the qualities to appeal to the Australian market.”
